Institutional Networks

[2013]

Boston’s Longwood Medical and Academic Area (LMA) includes 13 schools, 10 hospitals and research institutions, and 10 cultural organizations. Each institution operates its own campus and parking, generating a fragmented neighborhood of superblocks difficult to navigate for all modes of transit. Worse, this failure of urban design betrays the diverse, cross-disciplinary nature of the LMA and its member institutions.

This visualization series elucidates these collaborations across nationally recognized academic, medical, and cultural institutions. The LMA should aspire to a cohesive urban campus that reflects the idea exchange, learning, and service-oriented collaboration such proximity catalyzes.
